History

The First Day of Issue tier and the David Hall signature label are holder designations applied to an ordinary 2024 bullion American Silver Eagle, so any premium attaches to the encapsulation and pedigree rather than to the dies or the strike. David Hall entered professional numismatics in 1966, became a full-time rare coin dealer in 1972, and has operated David Hall Rare Coins since 1977. In 1985 he founded PCGS with six other dealers and served as its first president when the company began grading in February 1986. The signature label program bearing his name has run across many series, including a 1976-S silver half dollar and the 2016 30th Anniversary Silver Eagle, and continues on current Gold Eagle issues.

Details

The coin inside the holder is a standard bullion Silver Eagle struck in .999 fine silver, weighing 31.103 grams, or one troy ounce, with a diameter of 40.6 mm and a thickness of 2.98 mm. The edge is reeded and the face value is one dollar. Bullion Silver Eagles carry no mint mark, unlike the proof and uncirculated versions, which use P, S or W. Reported mintages for the 2024 bullion issue range from roughly 14.6 million to 24.9 million.

Features

The obverse is Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty, dated 1916 and used on the series since its 1986 debut. The reverse is Emily Damstra's eagle landing on a branch, introduced in 2021 as part of the redesign marking the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program. That design replaced John Mercanti's heraldic eagle with shield and thirteen five-pointed stars, which had run from 1986 through 2021. A 2024 coin is a Type 2 reverse without exception, since the Type 1 and Type 2 division applies only to the 2021 mintage year.
