History
The Kennedy half dollar began in 1964, struck in the months after President John F. Kennedy's assassination. From 2002 the Mint produced half dollars only in numismatic quantities sold at a premium, and 2001 was the last year the Federal Reserve was known to have ordered Kennedy halves for general release. That pattern broke in 2021, when circulation-quality halves again went to the Federal Reserve for distribution through banks; of the 15,166,400 circulation-quality 2021 halves struck at Philadelphia and Denver combined, 66 percent were shipped to the Fed. The resumption came during the coin circulation disruption that began in 2020, though no official reason for it was given.
Details
Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro the reverse, both carried over from the 1964 original. The 2021-P is a copper-nickel clad piece, with 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, measuring 30.61 mm across a reeded edge. Reported business-strike mintages for Philadelphia range from roughly 4.1 million to 5.1 million, the lower figure representing coins produced specifically for circulation release. The P mint mark appears on the obverse.
Features
The obverse carries Roberts' left-facing bust of Kennedy with LIBERTY across the upper field, IN GOD WE TRUST above the date, and the mint mark below the truncation of the neck. Gasparro's reverse adapts the Presidential Coat of Arms, with the heraldic eagle surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the scroll. No major doubled die or repunched mint mark variety is recognized for the date. The First Strike and First Day of Issue designations that appear on some holders are submission labels tied to the date of receipt rather than distinctions in the dies.
