History

In September 2007 Congress passed the Native American $1 Coin Act, which directed the Mint to adopt a new reverse design beginning in 2009. The 2007 and 2008 dollars therefore continued the Sacagawea design that had been in use since 2000, and the Native American series followed two years later. The 2007-P and 2007-D circulation strikes never entered commerce: the Mint sold them at a premium directly to collectors in bags, rolls and mint sets. That distribution method accounts for the relative abundance of well preserved examples, since the coins were never handled as money.

Details

The obverse is the work of Glenna Goodacre and the reverse was modeled by Thomas D. Rogers Sr., an arrangement carried through the 2000 to 2008 type. Production for this issue took place at the Denver Mint, identified by the D mint mark. The planchet is the manganese brass clad type used for the dollar series, and normal examples have a plain edge.

Features

The reverse carries the Rogers soaring eagle used on Sacagawea dollars from 2000 through 2008. On this type the date, mint mark, IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY all appear on the faces of the coin, the arrangement that ended in 2009 when the lettering was moved to the edge. PCGS also recognizes a 2007-D edge lettering variety under a separate catalog number, 513374, listed as a regular strike distinct from the normal Denver issue.

Notable facts

  • PCGS catalogs the normal 2007-D regular strike as coin number 149564.
  • The Philadelphia companion issue, the 2007-P, was struck to the extent of about 3.64 million pieces.
  • PCGS considers the 2007 dollars very common through MS66 and scarce only at MS67 and above.
  • A 2007-S proof was issued as well, with most survivors grading PR68 to PR69 Deep Cameo and PR70 Deep Cameo considerably harder to obtain.
