History
San Francisco struck the 1988 half dollar as a proof for sale to collectors, continuing the arrangement under which the denomination's annual proof output came entirely from that facility. The date falls within the stretch when the Kennedy half dollar was still an authorized circulating denomination; general circulation issues ended after 2001, after which the Mint struck halves in smaller quantities for collector sale until Federal Reserve shipments resumed in 2021. The design dates to 1963 and 1964, and by 1988 it had long since settled into the copper-nickel clad composition that defines the Type 3 series.
Details
Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro are credited with the design. The coin was struck on a copper-nickel clad planchet, with outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core, weighing 11.30 grams and measuring 30.61 mm across. The edge carries 150 reeds. San Francisco produced 3,262,948 proofs for the date, a figure that for a proof-only issue corresponds closely to the number of 1988 proof sets distributed.
Features
DCAM, or Deep Cameo, is the top surface designation for this issue, applied to proofs with fully frosted devices set against deeply mirrored fields. A doubled die obverse is cataloged as FS-101 for the date and is recognized in both CAM and DCAM form, making it the one die variety of consequence for 1988-S halves. Several holder designations also attach to this date, including the Thomas Cleveland MSS, Thomas Cleveland Proof Set, and David Hall Signature labels, all of which record provenance rather than any difference in the dies.
Notable facts
- A PR70 example brought $3,680 at a Heritage Auctions sale on September 1, 2003, a level far above what the grade commands today.
- PCGS estimates 2,789,820 survivors in all grades and 2,650,329 in grade 65 or better, or roughly 85% and 81% of the original mintage.
- The issue carries a PCGS rarity rating of R-1.0 across every grade tier and ranks 1 of 32 within its comparison set, placing it among the most common coins in the series.
- The 1988-S half dollar contains no silver, contrary to retail descriptions that occasionally label it a 40% silver piece.
- Because the coin was sold only in proof sets and never released into circulation, worn or impaired examples result from handling rather than commerce.
